“Web” by John Wyndham (1979, Michael Joseph)

Written before 1969, but not published until ten years after his death, Wyndham’s final novel is as fine a piece of work as you would expect from Britain’s greatest science fiction writer (apologies to Arthur C Clarke and pals). Telling the story of a group of people who sail to a remote pacific island to begin a utopian community, the ominous sense that something is about to happen to them is present right from the start. A solidly written and entertaining piece of work. 4/5

(read also, “Day of the Triffids”, “The Seeds of Time”, “The Midwich Cuckoos” and “The Chrysalids”)
